 Farming opportunities in Romania
In the current state from Romania, the majority of the agricultural producers owns small land surfaces, has reduced incomes and they do not have necessary production means and sources to cover the production and household needs, being

mainly non-agricultural  owners, especially small town inhabitants or old owners without heirs. The amount of money allocated for achieving and administrating land has reduced their possibility to invest in agricultural production - technical means, know-how, biological material etc - and the economical base of reproduction. With a mediterranean type climate and access to the waters of the Danube for irrigation, through an already existing canal system, yields can be substantially be increased, as with the use of western technology. At present crops grown include: wheat, barley, rapeseed, sunflower, maize, soya, rice and potatoes. There is an extensive rail network and use could also be made of the Danube River by Euro-type barges, which can travel up to Rotterdam or any other world wide sea locations. As Romania already has Associate status with European Union, the privatisation of all State farms, which started in 1999, has been accepted as the only way forward in agriculture especially to speed up the process of inward investment and the liberalization of land trade offers advantages which stimulate the agriculture development. Potential exists to grow crops at a lower cost and to export to expanding markets, outside Europe or sell to markets within the EU.
In few years, predictably 2007, Romania will become a full member of the EU, and the implications on agriculture are obvious. Our specialists foresee that romanian land investment is likely to become more valuable than ever, a hedge against inflation, and for some global investors, a hedge against currency devaluation. Inside town limits, land can be held as an investment with almost no management involved, while agricultural land outside town limits can be operated as an ongoing business, with profit on the european or asian market.

Romania has an excellent climate for growing wine
In communist times, Romania was the sixth largest wine-producer in Europe. Now Romania is pulling out all the stops to put itself back on the international wine map, hoping that within five years the country's Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon will be internationally recognised. The good news is that European business people are queuing up to take advantage of Romania's wine-making potential. Nicolae David, Vinterra International's manager, said that foreign investors like the excellent soil and the climate. On its first official wine-tasting event, on august the 5th 2002, Mihaela Badea, director of Romania's first private winery, SERVE - set up with French money, pointed out that the land in Romania is cheap, but newcomers have to battle romanian bureaucracy. On the same event Philip Cox from Vintners Transylvanian said that the government should sort out Romania's bureaucracy: "we have up to 1,000 people working for us when we pick the grapes and we have to take the paperwork to the tax authorities in a truck".
